My name's Emma, and I started PlantPlate in 2013 with the help of my husband Scott, a web developer and fellow plantivore. I’m a certified Plant-Based Nutritionist who loves to cook, and I've followed a plant-based diet for over a decade. Having lived in various locations throughout the world - sometimes on a shoestring budget, and often with irregular and demanding work schedules - I’ve had to constantly adapt my diet in order to make it work. It’s taught me a lot, and it’s motivated me to show others just how accessible and enjoyable this way of eating can be.

The recipes featured on PlantPlate are based on minimally processed plant foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. They're free from all animal products, processed oils and refined carbohydrates, and are made with simple and affordable ingredients. Our articles are aimed at providing you with plant-based know-how when it comes to shopping, cooking, nutrition and day-to-day living. We have answers to common questions and share practical knowledge that we have acquired through experience. Finally, the resources section contains links to books, DVDs, and video presentations from some of the world's leading experts on plant-based nutrition. Pear and Apple Crumble

This classic dessert has been given a healthy plant-based makeover! Packed full of fruit and with no added fats, this crumble is the perfect way to finish a delicious holiday meal.

Crumbles are one of our all time favourite desserts, and fortunately, they're incredibly easy to make plant-based and oil-free. In fact, this is the kind of dessert that's almost healthy enough to have for breakfast!

The cinnamon and nutmeg give this crumble a slightly festive flavour (and by that we mean Christmas-y!) If you're feeling a little adventurous, you could add a little allspice or ground cloves to the topping mix as well.

This version uses apples and pears for the filling, but you can substitute other seasonal fruits in their place. Ripe peaches and nectarines work really well, or you can combine your base fruits with any assortment of fresh blueberries, raspberries or blackberries.

To make this recipe gluten free, be sure to use certified gluten free oats.


For the filling:

  • 2 medium apples
  • 2 large ripe pears
  • 2 tbsp. applesauce
  • 2 tbsp. date puree (or substitute 1 tbsp. maple syrup)
  • 1 tbsp. water
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

For the topping:

  • 1 + 1/4 cup whole oats
  • 1/4 cup masa harina (fine cornmeal) or rice flour
  • 4 tbsp. maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon


  1. Preheat oven to 170°C / 350°F. Peel and core apples, then dice into small chunks. Dice pears into similar sized chunks. Place fruit in a pot or saucepan with all remaining "filling" ingredients. Cook mixture over a medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  2. Combine all toping ingredients in a bowl and stir to combine. It's best to start with a spoon, then work the mixture a little with your hands to make sure that the syrup is evenly mixed with the oats (it should be coarse and only stick together slightly.) 
  3. Pour the filling into an oven-proof pie dish, then top with an even layer of oat mixture. Bake for 15 minutes, until topping is lightly browned and crisped. Remove from the oven and allow to stand for 5 minutes. Serve with a generous spoonful of Vanilla Creme or 3 Ingredient Soft Serve.
